AKC: Both interim report of 10/17/06 and current 12/30/06 report
re: Interim AKC Committee Report for Minutes
As has been told by our Board Persons, we have achieved AKC recognition for the Swedish Vallhund with the American Kennel Club. Our entry date into this prestigious group is June 27, 2007. The AKC Board voted on our application for recognition on 10/10/06.
I would like to give thanks to persons involved in this achievement and to document the history of this goal. Each member and each Board has worked to achieve this by their participation in voting, working on the board and committees, and specific tasks assigned and completed.
To ALL of you who have joined the SVCA and especially those who maintain their membership;
To ALL of you who have owned and loved SVs and showed and did trials with your SVs;
To ALL of you who have taken time to promote the SV in writing and at events;
To ALL of you who have given us information as to what you have done with your dog so that comprehensive reports to AKC could be written;
To ALL of you who have given pictures for the Club, Newsletter, and Website;
To ALL of you.....a great thanks. without you, we would not have achieved our goal!
As in any endeavor, there are some specific persons to whom a special thanks are due:
To those persons who worked to reorganize our Club in 1998 so that we could have a working, members’ Club. There were no Club documents nor Club policies nor real & active Club organization prior to this. They worked on a constitution, bylaws, standard, ethics (guidelines), newsletter, website, committees and polices....from scratch! Documents were ratified by membership. We thank those initial reorganization board members, without whom we would not have achieved our goal: Cheryl Albert, Rose Martino, Kathy Lake, Kerstin Ottmar, Gail Smyka. They wore many ‘hats’ and accomplished many tasks.
To Leonie Darling for contributing our database program, Breedmate. Then she along with Ewa Sundin, Halla Seppala, Bonnie Benneker, and Jaqui Bayliss from the UK, worked to get all the SV ancestors into the database to aid us in trying to get our pedigrees for all USA dogs so we could enter AKC/FSS....the starting point. Without Leonie’s starting the Worldwide database....we would not have achieved this goal.
To Cindy Kingsley, who took over as Registrar after I started a few entries into the database. We already had designed the pedigree to AKC specifications in the program but Cindy literally ‘jumped’ in and entered almost all of the dogs we knew of and continued entering new dogs and perfecting our program until we got everything together for FSS. We officially entered AKC/FSS in 12/99. Cindy continued contact to work out any loose details with the pedigrees and per AKC, of the 292 dogs we entered at that time....all had perfect pedigrees. No AKC ‘red flags’ at that time. Without the hours of work Cindy put in, we would not have achieved this goal.
To all those who have done general education presentations and judge education presentations on the SV. AKC really wanted to see in the reports all the public work that was being done. Also to our SVCA Committee which produced the SVCA Judge Pamphlet and continues to work with AKC re: SV on the AKC website and to the SVCA Education Committee for working on public information handouts and pictures.
To Elaine Dorwart, Pat Lejman, and Mari-Beth O’Neill of the AKC who worked with me on what was needed in the reports to show AKC that we are an outstanding Club and Breed worthy of full AKC recognition. Also to other members of AKC who worked with specific SVCA persons to accomplish specific goals.
There are numerous others who could be mentioned by name.......suffice to say that all contributions have been appreciated and necessary to get us to this point.
Back at the 1998 National Specialty and Membership Meeting in Belleview, MI, I made a promise to members: that I would work in whatever capacity needed by the Club to achieve our goal of AKC recognition. From 1998 through today, I have worked at many posts within our Club. I still will need to complete two more reports to AKC until we are fully recognized; however, we have achieved our goal of recognition for our wonderful Swedish Vallhund and recognition of the SVCA as the Parent Club with AKC. Our Board will be deciding when we will vote for our delegate to AKC (starts only after 6/27/07), so that someone will carry forward our representation officially with AKC. I wish them well.
All I can say is that I have fulfilled my promise, my word to members and I rejoice with each of you in the accomplishment of our goal. It is only because of each of you and your contributions and the contributions of the special folk above who did so much for us that this goal is achieved.
Thank you so much for your trust in allowing me to work as a liaison between our SVCA and the AKC.

SVCA Contact Person to the AKC
Report of 12/30/06
The AKC report will be submitted the first week of January, 2007. It will contain all current Board Minutes; updated policies; Specialty 2006 information and catalogue; membership info, committee reports, etc and will, as usual, be presented in binder format with dividers and our Club Logo on the cover. I will continue to gather information and compile the final report in June, 2007, just prior to our SV being fully recognized by AKC on June 27, 2007. At that time, my post of AKC contact person will expire.
Updated information from Mary Beth O’Neill : due to a question from a member, I asked Mari-Beth O'Neill of AKC about our currently registered dogs in FSS receiving AKC certificates and a statement explaining our being in the Studbook as of March 1, 2007.
Her response: re: AKC certificates:
"The new certificates will be mailed to the owners, there is no charge for this service. The date suggested for entry into the studbook is March 1, 2007, however this may be changed as a result of other work."
the studbook " means that all dogs registered after March 1, 2007 will receive a registration certificate and all litters registered should be done on an AKC Litter application. The fully recognized date (of 6/27/07) is the date the breed will be eligible to compete in the Herding Group."
The website has been updated on a regular basis. We are nearing 116,000 hits on our website. Some suggestions re: website and breeders list entries on website have been given to the Board and are under discussion. SVCA Contact Persons has been made more readily available by placing it at the top of the Table of Contents on each page. The coming year will see us continue to update our website and add features as members and board approve.

re: Quarterly reports, 3/07
The latest AKC report was sent in on 1/12/07. At that time, there were 675 SVs registered in the USA. The report was submitted to the newsletter for publication and is also on the website.
There were a few updates with AKC:
1. A question arose re: herding titles. Upon checking with Ms. O’Neill, we found that the AKC did not inform us of rule changes in 1/06. As of 1/1/06, SVs may compete for titles in herding.
2. Many members have received their AKC certificates for their SVs; some have not. Per AKC, "Certs were not printed for dogs born before 1/1/1997 which may involve some dogs. If that is the case we can have them printed on a dog by dog basis by contacting Christine Weisse" email@example.com .
Our final report will be sent to the AKC just prior to 6/27/07. If you have participated in any educational event in regards to the SV, please let me know: event name; place of event & date; participants; people who came to the event; short description of the event. I will include the information in our last report. firstname.lastname@example.org
We are nearing 125720 hits on our website. Changes and updates have been done on a regular basis. An updated copy of the full SVCA website has been submitted to the Treasurer.....this is usually done on a 6 month basis. New Breeders List pages have been added and some have been updated. For ease of use, The table of content buttons have been arranged alphabetically as have the breeders on the breeders page. The Health & Genetics content button and page have been updated per the chairperson of that committee. Updates have also been done to the Links page.

re: Quarterly reports 6/07
re: Education Committee............one of two possibilities
A. Rename Education Committee to Public Relations.
1. Divide the committee into two subcommittees: one for General Public Education
2. Second subcommittee: Professional Communications
The first would continue to serve the general public with our general information. The second would be the liaison with professional Magazines, books, newspapers etc. This subsection would provide the general information PLUS board approved SV pictures and videos.
B. Keep the Education Committee as is and appoint a separate Professional Communications Committee
1. This committee would be the liaison with professional Magazines, books, newspapers etc. This subsection would provide the general information PLUS board approved SV pictures and videos.
The latest AKC report was sent in on 6/21/07. At that time, there were 715 SVs registered in the USA. The report was submitted to the newsletter for publication will also be on the website.
This is the last report to be done on behalf of the SVCA prior to our SV’s full recognition on 6/27/07. I have been assured that my last report and the interim AKC report of 10/06 will be printed in the next newsletter. In the interim report, you will find all of the persons we have to thank for getting us to this point. As for me, I wish to thank you for the honor of serving you and the trust you placed in me in regards to this function. Thank you.
We have surpassed 134260 hits on our website. Changes and updates have been done on a regular basis. New Breeders List pages have been added and some have been updated. For ease of use, SVCA Contacts page has been arranged alphabetically as have the breeders on the breeders page. The AKC page is updated with our history with AKC being a link and the page now devoted to AKC and SVCA Legislative Contact to AKC. Updates have also been done to the Links page, per board request. New pages pertaining to Canine diets and the Pet Food Recall Info were added as a convenience to our members.
